Parkland is a city in Broward County, Florida where zoning laws are designed
to protect the "parklike" character of the city. Initially, there were no stores
in Parkland, though this changed in the early 2000s. As of 2006, the population
estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 22,183 It is part of the South Florida
metropolitan area, which is home to 5,463,857 people.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 13,835 people, 4,349 households, and
3,805 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,356.7/mi˛
(523.7/km˛). There were 4,522 housing units at an average density of 443.4/mi˛
(171.2/km˛). The racial makeup of the city was 91.42% White (84.1% were
Non-Hispanic Whites,). 3.07% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.22%
Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races, and 1.24% from two or
more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.33% of the population.
Parkland is the best educated city in Florida, proportionately, with 60.7% of
adult residents (25 and older) holding an associate degree or higher, and 52.8%
of adults possessing a baccalaureate degree or higher (2000 Census).
There were 4,349 households out of which 57.8% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 78.2% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female
householder with no husband present, and 12.5% were non-families. 9.5% of all
households were made up of individuals and 1.2% had someone living alone who was
65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.18 and the average
family size was 3.42.
In the city the population was spread out with 35.1% under the age of 18, 4.3%
from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.8% who were 65
years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there
were 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $102,624, and the median
income for a family was $108,657. Males had a median income of $73,942 versus
$41,425 for females. The per capita income for the city was $41,896. About 2.0%
of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including
3.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
As of 2000, speakers of English as a first language was 82.79%, Spanish was at
11.48%, Italian at 2.03%, and German made up 1.20% of the population.
As of 2000, Parkland was the 127th most Cuban-populated area in the US, which
was tied with Dania Beach and Fort Lauderdale at 1.69% of the population.
